Language Arts
As an elementary teacher with a specialization in language arts, I am a firm believer that success in reading leads to success in all other subjects in school. The importance of assessing students on their literacy progress is cruicial to providing them with tasks that will lead to literacy success.
Throughout my literacy units during the intership year, students were consistently assigned reader's notebook entries that pushed them to identify story elements of the novel they were reading, as well as question, respond and make predictions about the text. Students showed increasing mastery of these response journals as the year progressed. They ability to produce quality predictions with evidence, as well as quality responses and questions showed the higher-order thinking they were engaging in on their own in independent novels.
